Top Faqs

  • Why do Stanhopeas flower for only 3 to 5 days?

The most logical answer for this is probably because of the amount of perfume each flower emits; there must be a time limit for the plant to be able to do this.

  • What size does a Stanhopea plant need to be to flower?

The plant will need to have a minimum of three medium to large sized pseudobulbs.

  • What is the best growing medium for Stanhopeas?

I use a mixture of 75% Sphagnum moss and 25% perlite; in this mixture I get prolific root growth, and multiple new growths.

  • What is the best way to divide a Stanhopea plant?

I always try to pull and break the groups of bulbs apart with my hands.

  • How often do you re-basket your Stanhopeas?

I re-pot all my plants every two years.

  • How many Species of Stanhopea are there?

At the moment there are 60 Species and 6 Natural Hybrids.

  • What is the best Orchid Show to visit in the United Kingdom to purchase Stanhopeas?

In my opinion, The Peterborough International Orchid Show, which is held at The East of England Showground in June each year. It is part of The East of England County Show, which is held there on the same weekend.

The date of this Show for 2010 is Friday the 18th, Saturday the 19th & Sunday the 20th June.

  • Do you have divisions and Seedlings of Stanhopeas for sale?

Yes, I occasionally do. Please E-Mail me through my contacts page with your requirements; I will try to help you out.
